2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime Review: Worth the wait – but not for everyone

High demand and short supply mean you might have a hard time getting a 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid (PHEV) of your own, with shoppers are reporting lead times of longer than a year – and some even claiming two years – for their orders to be fulfilled. And while it’s probably worth the wait for most of you out there, others might be better off picking the conventional hybrid version of this practical and popular compact crossover.

Issue: On certain plug-in hybrid vehicles, the DC-DC converter located under the rear seat could fail. If this happens, the DC-DC converter and nearby parts could overheat. Safety Risk: A DC-DC converter that overheats can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the DC-DC converter. To reduce the safety risk, Toyota recommends not to charge your vehicle while the air temperature is below or expected to drop below 5° C until the recall repairs have been completed.

Issue: On certain RAV4 Prime models, the occupant classification system (OCS) may not work properly due to interference between seat components. As a result, the airbag system can turn off the passenger-front airbag even when an adult is sitting in the seat. Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with an 8-way power front passenger seat with a seat lifter function. Safety Risk: An airbag system that does not work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the front passenger seat. If interference is found, the dealer will adjust the seat, as necessary, and re-calibrate the occupant classification system.
